SharePoint Training - Course Syllabus
Course: SharePoint
2007 Jump-Start (Level 100 - Intro)

Introduction
The goal of this 3 day,
instructor-led course is to introduce
SharePoint 2007 to IT Professionals who need
to install, configure, administrate, and
design a Microsoft SharePoint 2007
environment. The course serves as an
introduction to both Windows SharePoint
Services v3 (WSS) and Microsoft Office
SharePoint Server 2007 Standard and
Enterprise (MOSS).
The instruction will begin with a Windows
Server 2003 environment, and will focus on
all of the steps necessary to install and
configure SharePoint properly in a single
server farm. Once SharePoint is up and
running, students will learn basic
administration, and the core functionality
of SharePoint 2007, so they can begin
implementing basic sites and portals.
Student learning will be facilitated through
a combination of instructor presentations
and hands-on lab exercises. A sample company
will be used in the labs to teach students
how to apply SharePoint 2007 from concept to
implementation in a typical environment.
Audience
The course is targeted towards IT
professionals who are responsible for
installing, implementing, and administering
a SharePoint 2007 environment. It is
designed for a technical audience consisting
of administrators, developers, web masters,
and others who wish to gain basic technical
knowledge about SharePoint 2007. No prior
knowledge of any version of SharePoint is
assumed.

Prerequisites
The only prerequisite for this course is a technical IT
background. The course is structured in a
manner that assumes the student is an IT
Professional, and comes to class with basic
technical skills. Experience with
SharePoint 2007 or SharePoint 2003 is
neither required nor expected of the
student.
Obviously, some students who attend will
already have experience with SharePoint.
The instructors will make the appropriate
connections for these students in the
lecture, without confusing the students who
are new to SharePoint.Course Materials and Lab Environment
Students will receive a comprehensive
course manual, which will include all
presentation materials and lab exercises.
The lab exercises are step-by-step and
fully documented in the student workbook.
Each student will be given access to
their own SharePoint 2007
environment on the classroom hardware.
In essence, students will be attending a
class where a fully functional SharePoint
2007 environment has been set up for their
use in learning the product. No
pre-installation of SharePoint 2007 software
on the student’s laptop is required for this
class.
Each student will need to bring a qualifying
laptop to the class.

minimum requirements.
Course Outline
(Note: This Course Outline is subject to
minor changes and refinements based on student
feedback and instructor experience.)
Module 1: Introduction to SharePoint 2007
This module presents a quick introduction to
the new products. As with previous versions
of SharePoint, a company will have the
option of deploying Windows SharePoint
Services v3 as part of their Windows Server
2003 deployment, or, for an additional
price, deploying the full Microsoft Office
SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007) premium
product. This module will explain the
differences between the two products and
will lay a foundation for the process of
determining which is most suitable.
Module 2: Installing Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007
This module will explain the hardware and software requirements
for installing MOSS 2007 and WSS v3, and
then guide the student through an actual
hands-on installation in a virtual Windows
Server 2003 environment. Each student will
have their own unique virtual server to work
with. The discussion will include what
versions of SQL Server can be used with
SharePoint, the various topologies that can
be used to scale up your environment, where
Windows Workflow foundation intersects, what
are Shared Service Providers, and planning
considerations from a hardware perspective.
Module 3: Creating the first portal
Upon completion of the previous module, each student will have a
fully installed and configured SharePoint
2007 server. Next, students will learn how
to create a new web application for their
portal, and then how to create their first
site collection as a collaboration portal.
This portal will serve as the center of the
entire deployment, so it will be important
that it is created correctly, and that each
student has a clear understanding of how the
results of their decisions affect their
portal.
Module 4: Basic overview of SharePoint 2007 concepts and core
features
This module will cover the basics of SharePoint 2007. Key
concepts discussed include:
-
Lists
-
Web Parts
-
Basic Navigation
-
Sites
-
Publishing Features
A thorough understanding of the basics will
provide the foundation that will allow the
student to quickly absorb the new features
introduced in subsequent modules. Even
seasoned SharePoint 2003 veterans will
discover some new functionality here due to
the numerous enhancements made to WSS v3.
Module 5: Survey of Advanced Features
The vast array of features included in WSS v3 and MOSS 2007 can
be overwhelming. Certain features are
available in WSS, others only in MOSS – and
some are only available in MOSS Enterprise,
but not in MOSS Standard. This module
provides a survey of the major new features,
shows which features are included in which
version, and suggests resources for finding
more details on each one. Features to be
surveyed include:
-
User Interface (UI) and navigation
enhancements
-
Document management enhancements
-
The new Workflow engine
-
Office 2007 Integration
-
New Web Parts
-
New Site-type templates
-
Enhancements to List technology
-
Web Content Management
-
Business Data Catalog
-
Search enhancements
-
Report
Center
-
Records Management
-
Business Intelligence and Excel Server
-
Forms Server and InfoPath
-
The “Features” feature
-
Alternate authentication providers and
Forms-based authentication
Module 6: Users and Security
No matter how feature-rich SharePoint is,
users must be able to access the features in
order to get value from the product. The
security model in SharePoint 2007 is based
around the concepts of "role definitions"
and "role assignments". This is a departure
from the Site Group-based security model in
SharePoint 2003. While some of the concepts
are the same, there are some significant
differences, and this module will present a
thorough discussion of the role-based
security model in SharePoint 2007, with
plenty of hands-on experience in the lab.
Module 7: Navigation and the user interface
A major feature of SharePoint 2007 is easily customizable,
intelligent navigation including features
such as a “security-trimmed user interface”
A second significant feature is navigation
inheritance throughout a site collection,
with the ability to edit the navigation
links through the administrative interface.
This module will explore the navigation
features and enhancements in SharePoint
2007. Other key features that will be
covered are:
Module 8: Document Management
Many companies first come to SharePoint
looking at its document management
capabilities. In this module, these
features will be covered, along with a brief
introduction to the Office 2007 Client
products and their interactions with
SharePoint. Some of the important document
management enhancements that will be covered
in this module include:
-
Item-level security
-
Content types
-
Major
and Minor versioning
-
Required Check-in, Check-out
-
Capturing metadata with the new Office
Document Information Panel
-
Navigation to document libraries from
within the Office programs
-
Offline document support using Outlook
2007
Module 9: Sites and the site directory
The structure that will become a company’s intranet is frequently
referred to as a portal, and most often a
portal is composed of many sites.
SharePoint provides the capability of
creating sites for a variety of different
purposes. These include publishing sites,
collaboration sites, meeting sites, blogs,
wikis, records management sites, personal
sites, and many more. This module will
provide an overview of all of the available
types of sites, and the rich features that
are included with each type. Students will
learn the strengths and weaknesses of these
“building blocks”, in order to be able to
build an effective portal using the
appropriate kinds of sites.
Module 10: Blogs, Wikis and RSS
WSS v3 has been significantly updated with
some of the hottest “Web 2.0” technologies
such as Blogs, Wikis and RSS feeds. This
module will give the students hands-on
experience with creating sites based on the
new templates and how SharePoint content is
different in these new types of sites.
Module 11: Search
The search engine in SharePoint 2007 is very powerful and highly
configurable. Furthermore, WSS v3 and MOSS
2007 share a common user experience – unlike
the user experience with search in WSS v2
and SPS 2003. This module will cover the
key features of search, and discuss which
features come with WSS v3 vs. MOSS 2007.
Some of the features that will be covered
include:
-
The new Search Center interface
-
New features in the Search Results
presentation such as "hit highlighting",
generation of "do you mean" synonyms,
and others
-
Addition of new content relevance
algorithms
-
Scope changes to WSS v3 search to
include entire site collections
-
New search web parts that can be
configured to create a highly customized
search experience
Module 12: Planning and Design
SharePoint 2007 is a very powerful and comprehensive product, and
when combined with Office 2007, the two form
an unparalleled system of productivity tools
for information workers. To get the most
benefit out of the system, it is necessary
to thoughtfully consider a number of key
planning issues before deploying the
products. This module reviews the key
planning issues that need to be addressed,
such as:
-
Navigation and taxonomy
-
Access control and security
-
Site directory
-
Site columns
-
Content types
-
Lists and Views
-
Search
-
Branding
-
Extranet Usage
-
Development, testing, and production
environments
-
Governance
-
Microsoft Office versions in use
-
Decision points for determining the need
for MOSS 2007 enhancements
Module 13: Administration
SharePoint is built on several concepts that must be understood
in order to successfully administer it. It
uses a three-tiered structure comprised of
Central Administration, Shared Services
Provider Administration, and Site Collection
Administration. The goal of this structure
is to allow the delegation of the various
levels of administration duties throughout
the farm, while ensuring that each delegate
has only the level of control they really
need to perform their tasks. This module
will cover the roles that each of these
tiers plays in a smoothly operating
SharePoint environment. Other concepts and
administration features that will be
discussed include:
